Forge, Middleton Lodge
It was only going to be a matter of time before Middleton Lodge featured on A Place Within as a place to RESTORE.
Frequently appearing in my social feeds courtesy of a number of people who enjoy spending time there, a visit for myself was instantly on the cards after receiving an invitation to attend the press launch of the new restaurant, FORGE.
Forge specialises in serving food foraged straight from the estate which is set in 200 acres of Yorkshire countryside on the outskirts of Richmond.
The Georgian grounds are so peaceful in the frosty morning light as the head gardeners take us on a walk through the walled gardens to see where the produce is growing.
The relationship between chef and gardener is explained; planning begins months in advance with the consideration of which crop seeds to purchase.
The Forge menu is one where the intricate detail of balance is key.
Walking across the ground to Forge, guests are greeted by an open fire; festoon lights criss-cross the courtyard above and though it’s a completely new restoration, has the lived-in feeling of decades.
Diners have the choice of lingering over a nine-course tasting menu or a three-course set menu. Delicate flavours are seasonal and selected each morning, which mean the menu is changed daily.
As you may well imagine, the food and wine we are served is exquisite. The dessert especially resonating with my pallette as being among perhaps the best I have tasted. Ever.
A fine dining experience is an opportunity to take ones time to savour, to consciously partake in an experience that for the most part in our lives is an otherwise rather hurried affair.
Indeed there is no rush and following dinner, guests can retire to the picture perfect setting of the Pool Lounge.
As we leave the cosy warmth of Forge and head out into the late afternoon air, there is a rather large excavation behind a partition wall. It is the makings of an outdoor pool for the Spa which is next on the agenda for owners James and Rebecca Allison. I am reminded again by the simple truth that often makes me smile:
Everything that exists in reality began life as a invisible thought…
As an extension of what is already a remarkable place, I cannot wait to see this development.
Middleton Lodge already holds awards from the Good Hotel Guide and Alistair Sawdays Special Places to Stay. I can well see other accolades being added to this following our experience at Forge.
For now, I will leave you with a gallery of a few other aspects of Middleton Lodge and hope should you be visiting any time soon, you will find your self RESTORED.
